Going to this place has always had a very high priority in our family. There are not many (mountain) lakes like this one and it can be accessed very easily. You can get there by your own car as well as by public transport. From the parking or the bus stop it is only a 10 minutes walk to the top of a small lift bringing you down to the lake - or if you prefer, another 10 minutes walk down through the beautiful pine trees.
In summer you pay an entrace fee for using the lake for swimming. If you wish to visit the restaurant only, you also pay an entrance fee, however you could use the ticket as a voucher in the restaurant. There is an opportunity to rent a (small) boat on the lake. The place is suitable for young and old and an ideal place to spend a nice summerday in the Swiss Alps.
More Show less. This is a stunning mountain lake with both the advantage and disadvantage of being quite easily accessible. This means that no particular effort is required to reach it (other than a few minutes walk and then a small cablecar) and hence is great fun for all the family including anyone unable or unwilling to walk longer distances. But of course it also means that there are plenty of people around, swimming, hiking or just enjoying the views.
Caumasee Rheinschlucht Crestasee
Infrastructure is good with a decent self-service restauran as well as rowing board and pedalo hiring. Definitely a highlight if you are in the region! We walked to Lake Caumsee from Flims Waldhaus through the forest. Being Switzerland the signposting of the forest trails was excellent and it was not hard walking. The path is well made and was a bit up and down until the lake came in sight when it decended steeply to the lakeside. There is a pedestrian operated furnicular taking about 4 people down to the lake.
We didn't use it because we walked down and then set off for the Rhine viewpoint in another direction but it does save a steep climb back up. The lake is beautiful with the water, trees and mountains forming a stunning scene but I did not like the 7 foot fence around the whole lake. A charge of 4 Swf is made for access to the lake shore although this can be offset against the cost of a drink at the cafe.
The close knit links of the fence were too small to allow a normal SLR camera lens to be poked through. A pleasant walk especially if combined with the Rhine viewpoint but the round trip will take about 3 hours especially for those less used to forest walking.
